Summary | 0001157: Effects textures' alpha rendering improperly (OS X)
Description | Effect textures that are supposed to use alpha rendering, aren't. The black doesn't disappear, leaving big black boxes around every texture. It happens with background effects as well as shockwaves, etc. At the same time, motion debris is also being weird, it is drawn as fully white. I'm guessing this is connected. I've tried this on both Intel and PowerPC with similar results. See attached for an example.
Additional Information | Tried using both the latest Media_VPs, using older Media_VPs, and using only vanilla VPs. No effect. Also fruitlessly tried turning on and off: -spec -env -jpgtga -img2dds -novbo

And you tried with the 710 patches, correct? |
Both with and without. I should also add that some planet bitmaps don't seem to appear at all when using the media vps (but do with the vanilla vps). I wonder if the handling of some file format (e.g. dds) is broken? |
What build/binary are you using? I seem to remember something like this now, but it should have been fixed a few months ago. There were several broken image handling aspects at one time or another, but by the time I starting finalizing the OS X RC builds for 3.6.9, all of that stuff was fixed. I'll double check on my Mac just to be sure it's not a basic code issue though. If it works ok then I'll post the build for you to test against as well. |
I'm using http://fs2source.warpcore.org/exes/osx/FS2_Open-3.6.9-RC7.dmg . |
So, any news or any more info needed? |
I still can't reproduce it, but I have one more data set to try out before the night is over. I'm putting the final touches on RC8 for OS X right now. Mostly sound fixes to get rid of most the OS X specific crashes, plus everything else that has gone into all previous Windows builds. Assuming that the sound code changes get through my test suite in short order, and the last data set for this bug passes, I'll release the build in a few hours. That should give you something a bit more stable to test against to know if the problem was a build issue or not. |
Give http://fs2source.warpcore.org/exes/osx/FS2_Open-3.6.9-RC8.dmg a try. |

After a lot of fiddling and testing, it is still happening, as seen in screen0001.tga In nebula missions it seems like this problem is a bit unstable. As I am flying along in one direction, the nebula poofs are properly transparent, but if I turn and fly in another, they suddenly cease to be transparent and start drawing their black boxes on top of each other. The appearance is much the same as when it happens in the background like screen0001.tga, except that it is moving of course. If I turn away from this direction back towards the one I was on before, the transparency will start working again. In case this is helpful, when using the media vps (incl 710 patches), the problems are as reported previously. However, when I use only the vanilla vps I also get a number of incorrect textures being used (e.g. squadron logos where thruster glows should be) as well as the "black box" phenomenon. |

Have you got a screenshot of it will just the retail VPs and nothing else? |
See edit above. I'll go get a screenshot using just retail right now and post it in a minute or two. |

Screen0002 and 0003 are using only retail vps in a nebula mission ("Mystery of the Trinity" to be precise). With media vps, the thrusters don't go wierd like this, but the poofs still act this way. Oh, and I also turned off all command flags for those shots. They make no difference. |
Don't have a clue. Attach your debug log, maybe that will help out some. |

New problem (see http://scp.indiegames.us/mantis/view.php?id=1176 ) is blocking me from seeing how things are doing. But when last I was able to see the gameplay, the problem still existed. I've posted my log (hopefully the right one), that I got a minute ago. Note that it comes from an attempt that also has the problem linked above. I'm starting to suspect that my OpenGL drivers are screwy, since the errors I am getting seem to be unique to my machine. Any idea how I can reinstall them? Or if I should try? |
I updated the RC8 build, so re-download that and give it a try. I don't really think that it will make a bit of difference here, but sometimes you just never know. :) It does just sound like a system specific issue though. I'm not sure how to repair broken drivers on a Mac, or if that is even the problem. You could always grab another OpenGL game (anything, doesn't matter), just to make sure that it isn't something specific to FSO. |
Well, it does appear to be system specific. I tried again on my G4, and it works after all (contra what I reported in the bug description--apparently my memory is failing). I don't know how I am going to solve it, but it seems that it isn't a problem with fso. |
Hopefully I can help out a bit with this. I seem to be having a similar problem, although not as severe. The only problem I'm having is with 'damage smoke' (the smoke any ship produces when damaged) and missile contrails. I don't see the "black corners" with shockwaves, nebulae, or any other textures at this time. I have a screenshot of it, but can't put it up yet (photobucket account down). Any changes to cmdline_fso.cfg have no effect. I've also tried deleting pilots and changing in-game detail settings. No effect there either. I have the final release of FS2_Open 3.6.9, and the latest Zeta releases of the mediaVPs, and I beleive thats all I have in my fs2 directory (besides the basic install). Edit: Strange... I added in the 710 patches (http://fs2source.warpcore.org/mediavp/?C=M;O=D) which seemed to make the problem disappear entirely. Without the 710 patches though... the problem is there. |
I have the exact same problem. Using 3.6.9 with all the zeta MVPs, including the 710 patches. Running on OS X 10.4.8 on an iMac Core 2 Duo with a Radeon X1600 256 meg graphics card. The same problem happens (nebulas not being transparent and large white motion debris) with no MVPs (albeit with poorer quality nebula textures). This must be a mac-specific problem, as the exact same install (with the PC exe) on Bootcamp doesn't have any problems. |
Hi all, I have this exact same problem. No alpha on nebula, suns, primary fire and white cubes for motion debris. I have downloaded all the latest releases from the HL forum (3.6.9, 710 etc). I am using a iMac 17" intel 1.8 X1600 128MB 10.4.8 Let me know if I can help with any further info. |
I put a copy of the same install on a Dual 2GHZ G5 Radeon 9650 256MB 10.4.8 and it initially looked like none of the alpha problems were repeated. However upon closer inspection I noticed that the Primary fire still had problems. I have attached a screenie. |

My intel mac has this problem but on my g5 it's not there. |
Can everyone verify that, if they are having this problem, they are using a Radeon X1600? So far it appears that everyone who has this bug is running the same video card. There is even a report of it happening with Windows and that same card. |
I got a 128MB ATI x1600 |
Yep, 256 meg X1600 here. |
In FS2_open Launcher OS X by checking -nomotiondebris all those squares and such are gone for me. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v617/shadowprophet/nomotiondebris.gif |
X1600 here as well. Turning off motion debris probably isn't solving the problem so much as merely making it less obvious, shadowprophet1. |
Reminder sent to: taylor Just a little bump. Any progress? |
Without the problem hardware in question to reproduce this there really isn't anything I can do about it. So unless somebody provides me with a Mac that has a x1600 card in it, it's out of my hands. Someone else is looking into it, so everyone will just have to wait until he comes up with something. Or, try to track down the problem yourself. ;) |
Has this "someone else" made any progress? Also, how easy is it to swap video cards out of a Mac? Would it be possible for Sesq to swap his x1600 out, or for you or your tester to swap a x1600 in? |
No progress that I'm aware of, but there are around 50-60 people hounding me about this problem at the moment, so it's a little difficult to keep track of it all. I'll test out my theory of the problem's cause in a Mac Xt build in a couple of days though. It still isn't really going to be fixable, since it's not our bug, but having the exact cause might help Apple get a fix out faster. As far as switching out video cards, it depends on the Mac. Mine in integrated and I can't swap it out, so there is little more me to do there. Enough people with the card are willing to help test stuff though, so it's not like it's a hopeless cause. But, as usual, it all comes down to me, and I have a huge back-log of things that need to be taken care of in the immediate future. This just has to wait a little bit longer before I can devote any more attention to it. |
just an add in note, I'e recently started messing with this stuff, and I have the same graphics issues playing FS2 open and any mod, even stand alone BTRL and WCsaga... I also have a Radeon x1600 in my Macbook Pro. |
Assuming to be fixed. |
Not resolved as of 29 August, 2011. See http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=77994.20 |
Closing as not fixable, since that thread reports the problem is with the graphics driver, not FSO. Crediting taylor since he did the lion's share of the work on this. |
