Summary | 0001255: Clicking 'Commit' on "Incoming Transmission" screen causes game to crash | ||||||||
Description | As also discussed in this thread: http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,45082.0.html This problem occurs 100% of the time in Homesick, and it occurs in Inferno mission "El Diablo" IF the player targets any of the turrets on the Diablo in the first half of the mission. If the player does not, the next mission loads but the Diablo has 0% on all subsystems and no turrets. Disabling/enabling the mediavps has no effect on the crash. Disabling/enabling SCP features has no effect on the crash. System specs: AMD Athlon 1.33 Ghz processor, 512 MB SDRAM, Radeon 9500Pro 128MB Command lines: -glow -mipmap -nomotiondebris -img2dds -cache_bitmaps -dualscanlines -targetinfo -snd_preload -fps (as I said, turning these on or off has no effect, it still crashes). Debug information from fs2_open.log for the Inferno crash can be found in the linked thread. Debug information for the Homesick crash can be found below. In both instances, GS_EVENT_ENTER_GAME and GS_STATE_RED_ALERT are one of the first and last lines found in the debug spew. Note that in both campaigns, when the previous mission is first completed and the "Incoming Transmission" screen loads, moving the cursor over either "Replay Mission" or "Commit" brings up a black box for the cursor. This does not occur after the game is restarted, but the crash unfortunaely still does. In addition, when the Commit button is pressed, the cursor moves to the center of the screen, the gamma flickers and darkens, and then the cursor moves back to the Commit button, and the game crashes. OK Taylor, two zip folders uploaded. As I'd completed the campaigns (and it doesn't crash from the mission simulator) I created campaign files using missions which have reported the crash both for me and others. In the Inferno data, you'll find the errorlog, my player file, a campaign file containing just the two missions that generate the crash (player the first, when the second loads, it crashes, providing you've targeted the turrets on the Kismat and Diablo in the first), and two player campaign files - one for the full campaign, which I played through previously, and one for the two-mission campaign I created to exemplify the problem. The same thing goes for the Homesick data, the only difference being the two-mission campaign I created is located with both missions in a VP. So you should be able to activate that VP in a mod command line and test it yourself. Both appear to be red-alert related crashes, and it has something to do with the previous mission (because the simulator works fine). As mentioned in the thread posted in the original bug report, the Inferno red alert crash is conditional on certain subsystems targetted. The Homesick one is not - for the missions I've included, it occurs 100% of the time. Let me know if you need anything else. |

I've only had a chance to check Homesick so far, but that particular issue can be tracked back to a pilot file problem. The red alert data is never (re)set properly (been that way since retail) and, due to another red alert bug fix, allows ships to get an incorrect weapon count. Specifically the Deimos in this case, which was getting several secondary weapon banks, and was having a NULL ptr issue later on in the code. That's easy enough to fix, though your pilot file is slightly fubar at the moment. But if you replay the previous mission in a build with the fix, it will have a chance to fix itself automatically. I'll try and post a link to an up-to-date 3.6.9-based build later today for you to try out. That will probably happen before I get the chance to look into the Inferno problem, but if they are related then you should be able to figure that out pretty quickly. |

Pilot file isn't a big deal - I keep a backup of the original before playing any campaigns, so I'm not worried about that. I'll try out a fixed build in Homesick when you've got it posted. The Inferno one is a little tougher to reproduce due to the finicky subsystems issue (i.e. if you don't target turrets and subsystems, the next mission doesn't crash but all subsystems etc are set to 0%), but from what you're saying it sounds like it's the same bug. Let me know when and where the build is posted and I can try it out tonight. |
