Summary0000965: Crash with any build newer than 3.6.7
DescriptionSeveral months ago I had to reformat one of my hard drives. Though FSO was on my secondary hard drive, and thus not directly affected, it too was uninstalled for whatever reason, and downloaded and re-installed. (Previously, I had a retail version of FSO) No problems were apparent until I tried to install FSO again, using the then-newest CVS build. After configuring the launcher, the loading screen came up (as usual) and then the pilot select screen. However, a fraction of a second after the pilot select screen loaded - enough time to move the mouse, but not to click on anything. Then, the Windows Error Reporting message box comes up (would you like the report, etc).

I did some testing then, and have done some since. VPs do not seem to have an effect (aside from using an old build with new VPs), whether present or abscent. The 3.6.7 build works fine, no errors at all.

Reading HLP forums aside, I set up a debug_filter.cfg file and ran the 3.6.9 RC3 build, debug version, no vps (aside from default FS2). I've got the log available on request - 69 bytes.

Can you attach the log to the report?

There. Sorry for not doing that earlier - I didn't think of it.

No you need to post the fs.log when using the debug builds
all you posted was the config file. Also for better results empty the debug_filter.cfg file. Gives us better data.

Have you tried using OpenGL instead of D3D? D3D is unsupported now and may be what's crashing on you.

Right... this is odd, so bear with me here.

Running on OpenGL, newest drivers...

1024 X 768 = black screen to error message. Neither the loading screen nor the pilot select appeared.

That was the same with all resolutions... save 800 X 600. The first time I tried to run it with 800 X 600, the pilot screen did show up for a second before the error, the same as with 3.6.7, except no loading screen. I didn't get a log of that one. Trying to replicate it doesn't work - just black, then the error.

I just tried to run 1024 X 768 again, no VPs, 3.6.9 RC3 debug, to get a new log now that I cleaned the config file out. Now, it's the same as with D3D - pilot screen for a second, then error - save no loading screen. I've got the old log - from when it was straight black to error - and a new one for this. I'll upload them both.

Running 3.6.7 on OpenGL gives no loading screen, but it works. Not only that, but running 32-bit colour (with OpenGL) gives me a mostly green screen when I click the exit platform/area. The actual box that comes up, asking me whether I want to exit or not, and a small square around my cursor, are unaffected. Seems to me to be a seperate bug, but I thought I'd mention it anyways, just incase it hasn't been identified.

Oh, and sorry for the double post, but I forgot to mention that the config file re-filled itself after I cleaned it out (using Notepad). Not only that, but it went from 69 bytes to 87 bytes, though the content appears the same.

I thought that I posted this already, but...

Make sure that you update your OpenAL version to 1.1. The log shows 1.0 and that may be causing some issues for you since the builds are expecting OpenAL 1.1 (since that's what we built them with). The final version of 3.6.9 will require OpenAL 1.1 on Windows for it to run with sound.

Try the RC5.1 build, it will require OpenAL 1.1 for sound to work and notify you if you've got an old version. If you don't have a recent enough version then the game should still work, but with sound automatically disabled.

Well, I didn't have OpenAL 1.1, but RC5.1 worked anyways, though without sound. I've now got OpenAL 1.1, and it works fine, sound and all. Thanks for going through all that in the log. Now I'm off to get the newest media vps. And, once again, thanks.
