Works in my test ("Surrender, Belisarius!"). What mission(s) don't work? If it's a mod then please attach the music file, in case that's the issue. |
I tried it again and it seems to fail (in the same mission you tried) only with my mods enabled for some reason, even if I remove my music.tbl and all the extra music files I have. These mods can be found here: http://home.comcast.net/~cp5670/pi16.rar Any ideas? |
Hmm, still works fine for me, even with the included music.tbl. Are you using any other mods too? Does a debug build give you any extra info (attach the fs.log if needed)? |
Very strange, it works for me too. The only other things I'm using in addition to the stuff in that vp are some more nebula effects and music files (which I tried removing with no effect). I'll see if I can narrow this down more. |

Just going to chime in as a new SCP user - I just did a totally fresh install as of a couple of days ago. I installed: -Retail 3CD Version of Freespace 2 GOTY Edition (under Windows XP). -3.6.7 Release (only for the launcher executable) - http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,35266.0.html -The "Zeta" MediaVPs, minus the mv_music addon as it is known to cause issues - http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,39905.0.html -And I have also tried both the 17th of May release, as well as 3.6.9 RC1. Both of these builds incurred this issue. In both cases, I encounter the exact issue where command briefings do not have music - only the actual briefing. I have the required OpenAL Driver installed, "Directsound" is chosen as my sound output from the launcher, and I'm currently running this on a Creative Labs Xi-Fi sound card if it matters at all. All other music tracks and game functionality seems to work fine besides this in the limited tests I've run thus far. I have no mods running besides the aforementoned MediaVPs. Interesting side note: I tried rebooting my computer for the hell of it to see if that would fix the issue. When I restarted the game and launched "Surrender, Belesarius!", the Command Briefing had music again. Then when I quit the game and restarted, it refused to play again. Edit: Just tried without the MediaVPs mod enabled - no change. edited on: 06-08-06 03:40 |

You're right, I am also finding that restarting my computer strangely fixes it once and it then breaks again. The problem seems to be related to the X-fi in some way. I have one of those in my main computer too, but this doesn't occur on my other machine, which has an Audigy 2. The fact that restarting fixes it was seemingly throwing me on the wrong track earlier; it actually doesn't have anything to do with mods. I tried switching between Directsound and EAX in the launcher and between the sound card's game and entertainment modes, but it doesn't change anything. |

Just FYI that I'm going to try and get a special test build (and test launcher) out to both of you this weekend. It's not likely to do anything to fix the problem, but it might give me more clues on how to debug it. Or it will just crash horribly when you try and run the game. Either way, it's going to do something different. ;) |

Sounds good Taylor - I can be reached on ICQ / AIM at 1293359 , or by email at alvandyk@shaw.ca |

Oh and I wanted to mention that Creative is working on X-fi drivers with integrated OpenAL support (ie, it will be supported in hardware). I don't want to recommend that anyone try beta drivers here, but you might want to see if something new is available with OpenAL support. Use betas at your own risk though. |
Yeah, in fact there are beta drivers available with OpenAL support, but they "expire" (artificially stop working) in September and you have to switch to other drivers at that point. Given my less than stellar experience with Creative drivers recently (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,39875.0.html), I think I'll pass on that and just try your test build instead. :) |

http://icculus.org/~taylor/fso/testing/20060610-win32.rar New build and launcher. This can be considered 3.6.9 RC2, and the final version of the 5.4 Launcher (assuming the recent changes didn't fubar anything). Starting with this build of each, the Launcher can detect if the build has OpenAL and change the sound tab accordingly. Also, it will list all sound devices available through OpenAL. Mostly these will be "Generic" something, though official OpenAL support in the X-Fi drivers may offer more options. You'll probably want to stick with "Generic Software" most of the time. The hardware devices tend to not support enough sounds and you will end up losing support for music and briefing voices. This shouldn't always be the case though and some sound hardware/drivers may work just fine. That's what you are to test though, it will default the the generic software device, but you can pick something else in the drop-down if other options are listed. FS2_Open will then try to use that device for the game. If you choose a hardware option and lose all music and voices, pick a software option and use that instead. If this still doesn't work out for the X-Fi then we might have to wait either for the all new sound code (which is a ways out), or the new X-Fi drivers. Otherwise I've pretty much exhausted all other options with these code changes. Let me know if anything good or bad happens. :) |

I tried this build a few times but the problem is unfortunately still there. I used all of the three options available in the Launcher dropdown menu (Generic software, Generic hardware and SB X-fi Audio), but they don't make any difference with this. Generic software seems to have overall better sound quality than the other two. It sounds like it's using a higher sampling rate. edited on: 06-10-06 23:52 |

Sadly I must report the same with this build - no success. Interestingly, even if I switch back to my motherboard's onboard AC97 configuration the same effect occurs, so unless this is some kind of deep-level driver problem, I'm not entirely sure if the Xi-Fi is to blame? I'll try to do some more testing if I get a chance, but I'm not sure what else I could fiddle with at this point. |

Some more news on this, I installed the latest Creative OpenAL driver (the OpenALwEAX thing) on my other computer and now it's happening there too. So it appears that it may actually be one of the OpenAL updates that is causing problems. I'll see if I can find older versions of the OpenAL dll files, which may fix this issue. |

Pretty sure this is a duplicate of another bug (or rather, it's a dupe of this one). Either way, closing this as a dupe of 0000938. Closered. |
