| Summary | 0000879: Cutscenes *****BSOD***** Under OpenGL | ||||
| Description | Running with Stable XviD 30-12-2005 or something but I doubt that's the problem as when I run cutscenes under Direct3D or outside the game they run fine. But if I run under OpenGL (need it for spec) the game BSODs my machine straight away (after the splash screen) as it tries to play the cutscene! I get a STOP 0x0000007F error. | ||||

I know this is a cutscene bug as I am an Inferno staff member and that loads fine under the Inferno build from the same date under OpenGL, but of course there are no cutscenes (as it is a standalone mod). |

Also, all latest drivers (6.3 Catalyst, AMD CPU driver etc.). |
Looks like it may be an Ati driver issue - http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,38832.25.html but I'll see what you have to say. |
This is likely a two part issue, one is OpenGL code related (and a FSO code problem), and the other is just the total hack job in getting movies to play in FSO. I've got new code in the works (lacks better audio) which uses ffmpeg and will work cross-platform. That will solve this problem for good, but I would like to squash this BSOD issue before then. If you can, please go back and tell me the first FSO build which demonstrates this problem. It is possible that this is just a driver bug, but it may be triggered by something in the code, and might be something I can work around. |

6.3 ATI drivers suck ass. Go back to 6.2 |
That's not really a good option for newer cards though, which often get signifficant improvements with the latest drivers. In any case, it's good to know that this is something that can be fixed. |
Sorry I already switched to 6.2 Omega's (which work fine) but there are probably more users with this problem on the thread I posted who may be able to help. |
should i close as its a driver issue? |

I would still like to know why it's a driver issue though. ATI drivers sucking is one thing, that would be slowdowns and rendering issues, crashing is a bigger deal and something we need a better response for at the least. There can't be some general driver issue with OpenGL since it would kill every other game as well. That the crash happens with movies lends itself to some sort of context issue perhaps, or something else entirely. If it's GL context related then there would hopefully be a way that we can at least protect against it crashing. If it's something else then I would like some idea of the problem. The drivers do suck, but this doesn't mean our OGL code is 100% sound either. |

I'm not willing to test this, since Catalyst 6.3 drivers remove all of my D3D hardware support. DXDiag fails and all that fun stuff. |
There is a 6.4 driver set out now. Does it improve anything? |
I am experiencing the same problems, running SCP in OpenGL mode, under Catalyst 6.3 drivers (I am using a All In Wonder Radeon 9700pro). I normally use Omegadrive's modded drivers, but am considering trying the official Catalyst 6.4 drivers. Direct3D functions normally, except that the 'interlude' cutscenes in the Freespace SCP Port (version 3.03) only play audio (the intro movie plays normally). |
No one has any ideas whether 6.4s work yet. Try checking if you can play the cutscenes outside FS2. |
I switched to the Catalyst 6.4 drivers, and I OpenGL works again on my PC. |
SuperCoolAl, please try the 6.4 Catalysts. Be sure to set a restore point before installing the drivers incase it doesn't work so you can roll back. |
No can do I'm afraid, I've just been spanked by the manufacturer for installing new drivers, and I'm not changing anything like that (at least until I've verified they've fixed the problem). |
