Summary0000877: Hidden rear laser turets in ATEN (mv_models 3.6.8 delta)
DescriptionWhile playing Shrounding The Light mission Divindends (STL-13.fs2) where you have to disarm a Aten, I've notice that rear-side turrets are really difficult to hit because they are nearly always hidden. I attach the mission and one screenshot where although I'm just in front of one of them, you can see how the target appears as hidden (the screenshot is red because I've just been hit by that turret). As you can imagine this behaviour is quite unrealistic.
Additional InformationThis could be an issue from mv_models (v3.6.8 delta) as the ships.tbl inside STL.vp says:

$Name: PVC Aten
...
$POF file: cruiser02.pof

And within STL.vp, fsport2_3.vp there's no cruiser02.pof. I also attach cruiser02.pof from mv_models.vp 3.6.8. delta

I have alredy posted it in FSUpgrade forum "3.6.8 gamma" as I thought it was easily fixable. (Now I know is an old known 'What the hell happens' bug).

A possible hint: Maybe if turret is just in the surface of model, the numerical calculation made by the software can not disguise if it is in front or behind it (ie. difference between -1.e-99 and 1.e-99). If it is possible to move the turret just a little OVER the body of the ship, that could be the solution, (you won't see the difference but there won't be numerical miscalculation).

Well I think the easy way of enjoying SCP is looking how other people make a lot of hard good work (this is at least what I've been doing) ...

I don't know if it is possible, (or at least if it is going to be possible to me ;) ), but I'm going to try modifying ATEN with modelview in the way I suggested to see if it solves this issue.

Well I tried PCS and Modelview and I can't find a way to move the submodels. :(

I have also noticed that paths are crazy for this ship (within FS2 F3 window). I will try learning about paths next. (I don't know if they have something to do with it)

Maybe the turret pivot is placed in the model. I'll try reconverting it in MAX when I get the time.
