Summary0000086: supspace looks rayed and rotates around targeted object
DescriptionThe subpace model has a rayed appearance and is rendered in front of everything, making the player blind. When a ship is targeted and you move your ship the model slides away and ships are visible, but the background is just black.

Want something to do, Sticks? :D

I thought you might be able to figure this out.

Is this in D3D, OGL or both?

I thought this had been fixed, very recently.
hmm... yes and no it seems

ok sort of fixed, but I just realised that we never implemented texture panning type effects, wich is needed for subspace to realy work right, should I put in the function pointers and implent the D3D part, or just leave well enough allone (seeing as no one has mentioned this yet)

Hmm.. fred crashes when I try to make a subspace mission:

Error: Can't open palette file <gamepalette-subspace>
File:E:\projects\Freespace\scp\fred_upgrade\code\Palman\PalMan.cpp
Line: 342

I think Im missing a file, anyone know where to get it?

Several places, but I uploaded it here. Put it in data/effects.

Bob's right, looks like its fixed.
The tiling isnt perfect but all the other issues are sorted (in both OGL and D3D).

I'll compare it against the retail ASAP.

For some reason I cant get retail FS2 to load a subspace mission.
In FS1 the effect looks better but fs2_open does seem to be tiling it correctly. There are clear seams.

It does look a lot better than when this bugs was originally reported.

Who committed the code that fixed this up?

I haven't committed anything yet

ok I commited it, the effect looks as good as it did in retail FS2 minus the texture translation (though there seems to be some odd boinking going on every now and then)

Boinking?

Do you mean the tiling is wrong, as shown in subspace.jpg?

boinking, like what the sky boxes used to do when you targeted something, there was a bit of jitteryness left in them, but I think it's fixed (though it seems HTL is completely turned off now in background rendering, wich sort of nullifies this)

Is this fixed now?

Texture panning for OGL will be in my next update so is that the only thing holding this bug up? The backgrounds are rendered with HTL now too thanks to Bobboau so that's no longer an issue.

As far as the tiling/seams go I'm pretty sure that they are in the original FS1 too but because of the blurring are difficult to see. I remember considering what to do about that when I was working on the icculus.org FS1 port. I didn't really want to traipse through the code at the time and figure out the differnce so I ended up doing nothing about it.

*BUMP*

Screenshot of subspace with Lightspeed's textures. The model is the one included with Lighspeed's graphics and the code is pure CVS. If there is still a problem with this please point it out.

EDIT: Wasn't actually using the original subspace POFs. Just using the default model and graphics doesn't show the rendering problems pointed out earlier, just a texture tiling problem that isn't code related.

so is this actually a problem anymore?

Going to assume this is properly fixed. At least most parts are anyway with the final OGL code fixes. If there is still an issue then nobody is seeing it.
