| Summary | 0000812: Random?? Crashes in OpenGL | ||||
| Description | I've had random LockUps while playing fsscp in OpenGL, I have n ATI9800XT card, tried drivers 6.2 and 6.1 + omega drivers 6.1, tried latest goober build and all of the 20060202 builds, with the latest VP's. It mostly happens when near a special effect, like Beam fire, ship explosion, ship warp in/out. I tried several missions and the original and the derelict campaign. tried different settings but cant figure out which one is the problem. I cant send any debugging Info while my system locks up completely and I have to reset it.... | ||||

Does it happen when you don't use the MediaVPs? (I'm betting not, in which case just remove mv_adeffects.vp and see if it makes a difference) |
I think I found the problem, it isn't related to the OpenGl code, I just played the game for a few hours, without crashing, only thing I've done is to run the with the -nomusic flag, I still experience framerate drops when loading a new part of a mission, but it doesnt crash anymore.. any idea what the problem is? I have 1024MB Ram, always at least 50 mb free whiloe running freespace (according to -stats flag) even at the moments when the framerate drops or game hangs... |
After I set that nomusic flag I have played the whole campaign and it worked without problems... NOw I tried running with the new build and it keeps crashing again, very random, nomusic flag is stil set, game hangs completely (and I have to reset my pc) or crashes to desktop, with the known nice windows message... any ideas? |
http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,38865.0.html this must be same problem, so... |
Still don't have a clue why this is happening. I works fine for me on three different computers (and OSes). Until I can replicate it I don't really have anywhere to start looking for the problem. |
could it be a problem with the latest mediavp's? |
It's certainly possible. I use my own MediaVPs, unless a bug appears to be directly related the the official ones and in that case I'll switch to the offical ones for testing. The official MediaVPs just use too much memory for my tastes so I have all of the same basic stuff, but optimized to work better with 128meg video card. I'm not sure how much of this you'll be able to get away with and have DerelictSCP still work, but try removing the MediaVPs one-by-one and see if you still get the hangs. You'll get a bunch of warnings because of missing graphics and things if you are running a debug build so it would probably be a good idea to use a release build for this testing. |

found the problem, I tried several combinations, game does not lock up without the mv_effects.vp Played through the mission four times without lockups, then put the vp back and it hung twice again... exactly at the same spot. somewhere when I look at the MT Orion, any I idea what could cause this? I use the .8delta vp's u have a list of what changes from .7 to .8delta? edited on: 03-18-06 13:58 |

I don't really keep up with the official VPs that much so I'm not sure what's changed between versions. I'll switch over to using the official VPs and try again to replicate the lockup. Which mission was it that you are consistently getting the lockups? |
the mission is called descent, from the derelict campaign, the last mission of the original campaign locked up too, but I m not entirely sure if it s the same problem, I now have those .8 delta vp's can I just use the official .7 mv_effects.vp for a while or whould it give problems? or can I download the version u use somewhere, then I can see ifif that helps... and I also have a 128meg vid card... I just noticed that the new mv-effects.vp is 60meg smaller then the old one, is there anything in .7 thats not in.8? edited on: 03-18-06 15:21 |

This may be the same problem I'm having. Game seems to crash occasionally when there's a lot happening. I get the graphical corruption thing where the image goes like a woven mat or something, if you catch my drift. I'm also running OpenGL on an ATI Radeon 9800 card. I can't say which version of the Catalysts I'm running as Windows is loath to let me into the Catalyst Control Centre. I think they're the 2nd- or 3rd- most recent though. The only mission in which it's happened more than once is the one where the Colossus is holding the Knossos, and it crashes shortly after the Iceni jumps in. Normally simply running the mission again and facing the other way at the point where it happens sorts it out. |
must be the same thing, its exactly what happens here.. |
That square thatch pattern sounds like a hardware related fault that isn't directly related to FSO. I used to get that on a defective video card with a loose power connector; when the power cable fell out, it displayed that pattern and crashed. It can also be caused by bad video card memory. Does it occur in any other game? |
I used to get it occasionally with Battlefield 2, but it hasn't happened for months. You could be right about it being a hardware problem though, as my card does run a little hot at times. |
As a test you can try to limit the FPS so that it will let the system idle some extra time between frames. Do this by adding a registry DWORD value of "MaxFPS" and set it to something like 30. If it stops crashing/hanging then you'll know that it's most likely a hardware issue rather than the code. That registry option is pretty new though so be sure that you use a recent build to test this. Also with with the -fps option to double-check that the registry option is having an effect. |
Well, I upgraded to the latest Catalyst drivers last night, and it hasn't happened since. So I don't know now. |
Is this still an issue for anyone else? |
I'm having a simular problem, sometimes while a number of effects are taking place on screen (though not that many) the game completly locks up, sometimes requiring a reboot of the pc. Tried taking out adveffects, no effect, and tried various rendering mods (d8, ogl etc).. Barton 3200, 1024mb ram, ATI 9600 pro 128mb with latest drivers, crashes with the previous version of drivers too. |
I'd Better add more detail, running the optimized 20060412 build, the game stops (frozzen screen) but the music keeps on playing as far as i can tell, sometimes I can alt tab out of it sometimes I cant, though i think this has more to do with opengl and directx. Just happened a few mins ago, one of my missiles hit an astroid, then bang, game stuck :). |
Managed to get an errornote from a crash, opengl.. |

Make sure that your system and video card aren't overclocked. Also try a newer build and see if it's still an issue. This just sounds too much like a hardware problem than a code problem. |
Well, the problem for me is solved after taking out the 3.6.8 delta mv_effects.vp now using the zeta, no problems so far :) |
chipper? Is it better for you as well? |
Can't actually claim this as a code issue so I won't resolve it as a fix. Code changes may have contributed to it finally working though. Either way... Closered. |
