DescriptionFor some time I'm having this error as I posted in "media vp 3.6.8. beta" thread in HLP.

In release version, just before "Choose pilot" screen appears, the game seems to freeze to a black screen. But with "Esc" or "Alt-Tab" I can go to the "PlayWnd Release.jpg" window. After closing it, (Aceptar is OK in Spanish), the game runs fine. But sometimes I also get this flase block and warning in other situations. For example, I get the warning just before the briefing screen in the last FS2 Main Campaign mission.

With a debug build, the game crashes. At the same point as release version, I get the same black window but a different "PlayWnd Debug.jpg" warning ("Clase no registrada" is "Not registered class" in Spanish). After closing it, an "Assertion Failed.txt" window appears with the attached content. If I press cancel the game quit, if I press OK I get a typical "The program has performed a not valid operation ..." Windows error. I also attach the "Debug spew.txt" contents at this point

As I am tired of getting this error and it seems it only happens to me, whenever I have got some time, I'm going to reinstall FS2 and FS2_open (Maybe something is broken in the Registry, or I've got a corrupted file or an ugly red shivan that sleeps in the processor heat sink).

But I don't want to lose my pilots. Can anyone tell me what files I have to back up?

I've got several mods in subdirectories and I've got Inferno too. (With inferno builds I get a different pilot list than with normal builds)

I'm not sure that this is even a FS2_Open problem actually. It's likely either DirectX, MediaPlayer, or a messed up DivX install. Perhaps some combination of those even.

As far as the Assertion error goes, check data/players/single/ and make sure that all of the filenames do appear corrupted somehow, and the .pl2/.plr files are less than 28 characters in length without the extension.

The longest .pl2 file I've got is "Rykaza Lightning Marshal.pl2" which is 24 chars long. But there are .cs2 files that are longer than 28 ("Rykaza Lightning Marshal.LMRelease4.cs2" is an example. Can it cause the Assertion error?

All the names use normal English letters and numbers. There are no "Ç", "Ñ", or punctuated vowels.

If I want to make a pilot back up, are these files the ones I have to copy?

Yes, .cs2 files have to be shorter than xx (I don't know how much). Cutting out "Rykaza Lighting Marshal" pilot solves the Assertion problem.

Now the game runs in debug as in release; I mean with its own f%$/&%g PlayWnd warning.

Thank you, Taylor. Just close this bug, cos I don't think it's a FS_Open bug but a global driver bug. (Or I do HAVE a shivan playing with my PC chips).
