Summary0000644: Sound popping in recent builds (mid-December)
DescriptionWhile using either the optimized or standard 12-14-2005 CVS builds there are loud, frequent popping noises. This happens both in and out of missions and with no media VPs installed.
System Specs: A64 3000, Radeon X800XL, Asus A8N-E w/Realtek AC'97 onboard sound, Win XP
Flags: -spec -glow -jpgtga -mipmap -2d_poof -cache_bitmaps -missile_lighting -targetinfo -orbradar -rearm_timer -ballistic_gauge -ship_choice_3d -3dwarp -env -alpha_env -ambient_factor 75 -allslev
Additional InformationI couldn't really justify this as a major bug, but it's still very annoying.

What version of OpenAL do you have installed?

Most likely 1.1 since I used the 1.1 installer from www.openal.org.

This happens to me too, it started happening right after I installed openAL (1.1) to resolve the "failed to read flagfile" error.

System Specs: A64 3000, Geforce 6600GT, Asus A8N-SLI w/Realtek AC'97 onboard sound, Win200pro
Flags: -mod fsdemo -spec -glow -jpgtga -nomotiondebris -2d_poof -noscalevid -dualscanlines -targetinfo -orbradar -ship_choice_3d -fps

latest cvs, doesn't happen with 3.6.7.

also happens if I select EAX or Aureal 3D form the "currently selected sound card" dropdown menu.

I guess uninstalling openAL would fix it, but i can't figure out how to do that, and the failed to read flagfile error would problay return.

So, I hope I didn't do anything wrong by adding this... if it was wrong, sorry...

I have this happening as well with the most build. Definitely annoying, though not seriously so.

It doesn't seem to care whether any mods or mediaVPs are installed, but I can say that it does not happen in retail. Turning off sound in the launcher or turning the volume down to 0 from in-game options does make it go away, so it is likely not just random static due to some non sound related issue.

Using OpenAL 1.1 and an onboard AC97 on an Asus A8N SLI Premium for sound. Actually the A8N/AC97 combo could seem to be a common denominator, that perhaps has some problem with OpenAL? 3 people is way too small a sample set to be sure though.

Regardless it does not happen in *any* other games, all non-OpenAL though as admittedly I don't have any that use it besides FS_Open to test part of the equation.

[Edit] Found a solution that works for me. It's Nvidia's drivers/codecs that come with the A8N motherboard that aren't quite up to par. Getting Realtek's newest AC97 driver (found here: http://w3serv.realtek.com.tw/downloads/dlac97-2.aspx?lineid=5&famid=12&series=8&Software=True) seems to have gotten rid of the static and popping noises for good. If others with the same problem can solve it the same way, this may not be an FS_Open bug at all.

Closing as a driver bug.
