Summary0000641: Soundtrack doesn't switch until current track ends
DescriptionFreespace won't immediately switch to a combat track when enemies arrive, instead it'll wait until the current ambient track is completely finished playing before switching. Also it doesn't switch to the next part of combat tracks on time, instead there's a few seconds of silence between them, this also happens with arrival tracks. Happens with both wav and ogg music files.

Does it happen the same way in retail too?

If so, we probably won't be changing it.

EDIT: Scratch that, this sounds a bit more problematic than retail's occasional lack of synchronization...

Nah, retail would let itself switch at certain points in the track specified by the music table. But it doesn't seem to be doing that anymore. Just plays from beginning to end.

I assume that this is OpenAL related but I'm not sure why. It's working fine on Linux, OS X, and Windows for me so I don't think it's a standard code bug. Either it's a driver problem with more than one OpenAL driver install and not using the newer one, he has an nForce based motherboard and is trying to use Creative OpenAL drivers, or there actually is a code bug and it's just hiding really well.

Hmm, just had a thought. What music tables are you using?

This occurs with the original music.tbl too, by the way. I think this bug has been there for quite a while, at least two months. The music sounds very messed up in a few of my missions in current builds because of this issue.

I still haven't been able to reproduce this in any mission so I'm sure what the trouble is. Either I'm just not noticing that it's messing up or it works fine under Linux. I guess I just need a list of missions where this will happen 100% of the time to debug it any further.

It happens in any mission that has music as far as I can tell. I'm fairly certain it's a problem with the way the game is playing the music, not the mission.

I have uploaded a simple mission where this can be seen. When the enemy fighters jumps in, it's supposed to play the arrival music, followed by the battle music. This works as expected in retail FS2 and in the older 9/17 build I use, but in the latest 12/29 CVS build, the ambient music continues playing after the fighters arrive and only switches once the entire ambient file has been played.

It's a fairly subtle bug in most cases, but I have two missions that rely on the soundtrack bits playing at the correct times to create the right atmosphere, where the problem is much more noticeable.

Oh good God.

Ok, I will just say that there is a certain level of stupidity that everyone is entitled to. And that the fix is in CVS.

Now please excuse me while I hide under my desk for a while.

The new bug he was referring to in the forums is different than this one.
