| Summary | 0000616: FRED2 variable camera movement speed | ||||
| Description | The camera movement speed in FRED2 seems to be dependent on what is visible in the background. If there are lots of background graphics in view, it goes at a fairly normal speed, but if there are none visible, rotating and moving the camera goes about five times as fast as it should, even though the speed settings are still the same. This makes it somewhat difficult to look/move around in the editor since the speeds keep changing all the time. Now I could be completely on the wrong track here, but I think it might have started happening at around the time that I updated my nvidia video card drivers. I went from XG 77.13 to the newer XG 81.85. At any rate, I didn't have this problem until a few weeks ago. This occurs in all FRED OGL builds as far as I can tell. | ||||

The movement of the camera in fred is dependent upon frametime. If the frame takes longer to process then the camera will move more per frame. At high camera speeds and low framerates the camera will jump around which makes it look like its going faster even though it isn't. A good way to show this is to have about 20 hi-poly fenris models in a small volume. Zoom out to view all of them and set the rotation speed to 50x by using shift+5. rotate around using pad4 or pad6. When the ships come into view then there should be a noticable jitteryness to the camera when compared to empty space. |

Yeah, that's basically the issue I am getting, but it's a fairly recent thing for me. Is there any way to cap the framerate in order to keep the speed constant? |

Just an update on this, the problem seems to have gone away completely on my new computer setup. It's back to how it used to be. It's rather strange, since I am using the same drivers as I was before. So this issue is apparently dependent on what hardware and drivers are being used. |

not a bug? was this an optical illusion of some sort? |

nah, it was definitely there on my old card. Someone on the forums (Stratcomm I think) said that it's always been like that for him, but I never encountered this variable speed effect until a few months ago. It's gone now for me though, so if nobody else is complaining about it, I suppose this could be closed. |
