| Summary | 0000615: Impossible to run Fred2_open since the 3.5.5 release without OpenAL | ||||
| Description | Since Fred2_3.5.5, it was impossible for me to use next Fred2_open release: Always the same error and on several PC: Impossible to find OPenAL32.DLL etc.... | ||||
| Additional Information | With the help of MetalDestroyer, i installed OpenAL, and now Fred2_open is running. I've some difficulties to anderstand why OpenAL is required for Fred_Open, no problem with FS2_open3.6.6 and 3.6.7 ? (to play briefings, or song in Fred???) | ||||

Fred2 lets you preview voice files, IIRC. If it didn't use OpenAL, we would have to re-implement support for OGG, as well as a separate sound system, for FRED2...so it's easier to just have OpenAL, since you need that for fs2_open anyway. |

FRED2 is still the core FS2 engine, but with an editor interface. Since the core engine will require OpenAL if built that way, so will FRED2. We're moving to OpenAL almost exclusively so it's something that's going to be an absolute requirement in the near future. |
