| Summary | 0000059: zero mass problems | ||||
| Description | It seems that ships having a mass setting of zero in their pof files cause some significant problems in the game if they collide into other ships. What exactly happens seems to vary between ships, but one effect I have frequently observed is that the ships with the zero masses just spontaneously disappear right after they crash into something. They cannot be seen or targeted anywhere in the mission but you can recieve messages from them and if they are your wingmen, you can still send them orders. I think the game thinks they are destroyed but they have not actually registered as such in the mission event log. Another effect that occurs especially with larger vessels is that the collision detection system completely messes up and e.g. if you are flying a fighter near a zero mass destroyer, it registers collisions anywhere near the ship (about 800m from it) even if you have not touched the ship at all. This caused no immediate problem in earlier versions of the game but version 3.53 seems to have made some changes in calculating collision damage and these probably depend on the mass values. This is not an issue for most of the default ships in which the mass values are correctly set, but many of the fan- made ships out there have their masses set to zero (the default value), the result being that some campaigns that used to work fine with older versions now have various issues. Although this is really the designer's fault, it would be nice if something was done to address these zero mass effects, since it was fine with 3.51 and the other versions. ------- Additional Comment 0000001 From Ian Warfield 2003-05-06 12:30 ------- Is there a difference in behavior between 3.5.3 and latestrelease.exe? ------- Additional Comment 0000002 From Gaurav Thakur 2003-05-07 10:13 ------- Not that I know of; I think the latestrelease thing is 3.53 at the moment. ------- Additional Comment 0000003 From phreak 2003-05-08 14:24 ------- try this exe, i looked through the collision code and it could possible div by zero so that could be the problem. http://www.swooh.com/peon/phreak/fs2_open_r.exe ------- Additional Comment 0000004 From phreak 2003-05-08 14:26 ------- ignore that last link it should be http://www.swooh.com/peon/phreak/fs2_open_r.zip is there a way i could edit my comments | ||||
