Summary0000517: Out of Memory and an other problem
DescriptionMy first problem is that fs2 open sometimes crashes to the desktop. I was not able to reproduce it. It happens in missions from the original campaign and between the missions. I get the error message on the screenshot. But more often the game crashes with an error message from windows. It is this "standard" box that you get when a rpogramm crashes: Freespace has asserted an error and has to be shut down. I played fs2 with the followed builds: fs2_open_G-20050728.exe, fs2_open_3_6_5.exe and fs2_open_T-20050807.exe. My comandline: fs2_open_G-20050728.exe -spec -glow -pcx32 -jpgtga -d3dmipmap -nomotiondebris -2d_poof -d3d_no_vsync -targetinfo -ballistic_gauge -3dwarp -tbpwarpeffects -env -alpha_env -fps -tbpwarpeffects.
The error appeares in d3d and ogl in 1280x1024 and 1024x768. sound was first on eax. tried directsound, didn´t help. I´m using mv_core, mv_effects, mv_adeffects, mv_music, mv_textures and mv_models. Also played without them, but the error appeared anyway. And I installed newer and older driver for my graphics- and soundcard
My System: Athlon64 3500+, 1GB RAM, Radeon 9800 Pro, Sb Audigy 2ZS, Asus A8V Deluxe, Windows XP Pro incl. SP2

Try playing it with no cmd params. If all goes well, start adding parameters one by one until you get the error.

Also, please try the debug build and get us the log.

Has this happened using DirectX or OpenGL?
What ATI card and driver version are you using?

Thanks :)

i played this debug build: fs2_open_G-20050728-dbg.exe , without any parameters.

while laoding the mission briefing the game crashed. a screenshot of the error dialog (Dbg error.jpg) has been uploaded.

the problem occured in direct3d and opengl.

also change sound from EAX to DirectSound, didn´t help.

i have a radeon 9800 pro.tried catalyst 5.8 and 5.7.

i´m trying to play the normal build (fs2_open_G-20050728.exe) without any params now. report follows.

i also mentioned that before the game crashes the mouse doesn´t run smooth neither during the missionbriefing nor in the options by pressing f2 during a mission.

Is it still happening with more recent builds? How much free memory do you have before you start the game?

i tried fs2_open_T-20050613.exe. in direct3d the game perfomance became after 3 missions unplayeble and i got graphicbugs. first there wars only a perfomance slow down when i activated the afterburner but 2 minutes later the overall perfomance went down. under opengl the game crashed to the windows desktop without any message during the second mission i played. when i started the game i had about 750 megabyte of free ram

Try the build in the first post here: http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=34852

Any update on whether or not a newer build fixes it?

Not sure what to tell you. No one else has reported similar problems so I would think that it's not a general problem with the code. You specs are certainly enough to handle the game as well. The only thing I can think of is that it's a problem on your end, but I don't really know what that might be.

I'll think about this one some more over the next day or two but it's likely this will get close as not being a code bug.

No clue what to tell you, sorry. Hopefully someone else will report the same problem and we can then be sure it's not just something with your computer. Keep trying new builds, perhaps we can revist this at a later date if more info becomes available.
