| Summary | 0000482: fs2_open_G-20050719.exe crashes when language is german and a mod is selected | ||||
| Description | When selecting language "german" with regedit AND selecting mod boomerang in the launcher (I installed the boomerang campaign in its own folder), the game crashes while loading the "Exodus" (sm3-06 mission from the main fs2 campaign) from the tech room. When selecting no mod, it works. When selecting language english, it works. Also works when no mod is selected in the launcher. If I restart the fs2 campaign, start it and go as far as the briefing of the first traning mission, then exit to the main hall, then select the first non-training mission (sm1-01) from the tech room, go to the briefing, then exit to main hall then select the exodus mission from the mission simulator, it works. If I do the same but exit both times before the briefing (while in the information part before the briefing), it crashes. | ||||
| Additional Information | The bug looks quite similar to the 0000463 I reported some time ago. I now realise that it might not have been resolved, because perhaps I have not taken care whether I selected a mod or not. errorlog.txt, fs2.log and my commandlines are attached in bug.zip | ||||

Just realised... In case you are wondering why I have language set to german: I have the german version. If I set the language to english, I have problems with symbols not displaying correctly (in game, for example the ships on the radar). If I select german, everything is fine with the graphics (I get a strange mix between german and english then, but that doesn't bother me) |
Does this problem appear in any earlier builds? |
It also happens with T-20050702 and T-2005622. I also realised that it only seems to work when I select no mod if I clear the cache (I am not absolutely sure. I am sorry that I have not enough time to test it thoroughly at the moment). I do not use a german build. Might this cause the problems? I have realised only a few days ago that there actually is something like the possibility to compile a german build. Perhaps when you realease 3.6.7 you could provide a german build, as it would be quite time consuming to compile from sources (especially because I have no compiler installed under Windows...). For you it will (perhaps?) only be one mor compile run... |

It no longer requires a special German build. If you have German data files then it will automatically switch into German mode, or you can specify it in the Language reg option. I don't use the German version but after a lot of testers ended up being German I did eventually get it. So I tried to recreate this with my German data but it worked fine. The only way I could figure it getting messed up is if the translation tables (strings.tbl and tstrings.tbl) got replaced for some reason. That particular mod doesn't include any tables but check your various directories for any out of place VPs or for the appearance of those two files. If you do find either of those two files then move them out of the way and try again. If it doesn't crash then you'll know for sure what the problem was. |
If I remember correctly, I also tried with others mods and it had the same effect, even an empty mod dir caused a problem (IIRC). If I find the time, I will do some more testing, and I will look for the translation tables. Thanks for the advice! Since when does it automatically switch to the german version? I think for me, it does not (english text, wrong icons for example in radar etc.), if I select no language (or english) with the reg option. |

Getting rid of a special German build was one of the first things that I did when joining SCP. The icculus.org version of FS2 (for Linux) had it for a while since a large number of testers were German and they requested it. If you run a debug version then it will have a line or two about the Language setting near the top of fs.log. For the English version I get this: AutoLang: Language auto-detection successful... Setting language to English Or it will say German when the German version is found. It looks at a file in root_fs2.vp to figure out what language it should be. Regardless of what it finds it will use whatever the Language registry option is set to. I'm not sure how the Launcher handles that but if the Language setting exists or is set to English then it will use English. If it's set to German then it will obviously user German. If the setting does not exist though then it will auto-detect the language and if you are using German data (probably needs the 1.2 original patch update at least) then it will switch to German mode internally. |

Has this been fixed in any way for you, pflumm? If it's not, could you run a debug build and look for the line Taylor described, and post what that line says? |
No, it has not been fixed yet, thank you for asking. I did not find the time yet to investigate it in detail. First thing I want to do is to make a clean new reinstallation of everything to see if it still hapens. However, I did delete the language key from the registry completely as a test. It then detected my german version correctly. But after that, selecting the exodus mission from the tech room did not work any more, neither when selecting a mod nor without one. I then put the language key back in again, set it to german and it STILL did not work when selecting no mod... Strange, because I think it worked formerly (see my bug report). I will investigate the whole thing in more detail when I am back from holidays (in two weeks) and will report my findings. I will have a look at the line which taylor mentioned then. |

Thank you for the reply, I geuss this bug will hibernate until then. |

I found out that mv_music.vp is the cause of this bug. When I remove it, everything works fine. Strange that the language setting has something to do with the music... |
Hmm, that's pretty strange. mv_music shouldn't be affected by the Language setting as far as I know. It did cause crashes though but those have been fixed recently. I'll close this bug for now but if you experience problems with this again pflumm, please reopen it. |
