Summary0000419: Slowdown in user interface sections with anis
DescriptionIn areas such as command briefings and weapon loadouts where anis are played, there seems to be a cap on my framerate, its like 10fps, sorry I can't describe it much better.

In game there is no slowdown.
Additional InformationI've tried several builds, and they all have this problem.

1024x768 16-bit and 32-bit OpenGL.

Command line-

-spec -glow -jpgtga -pcx2dds -d3d_no_vsync -dualscanlines -ship_choice_3d -targetinfo -orbradar -3dwarp -snd_preload -fps -allslev -ship_choice_3d -ambient_factor 75

Also I'm using mv_models, mv_core, mv_textures, mv_music 3.6.6

But it also happens in the standalone Inferno I test for so the media VPs probably aren't the problem

Do the talking head animations in-game exhibit the same slowdown? Does the same slowdown happen in D3D?

No, and it doesn't occur in D3D, but I can't use D3D due to the Radeon specular bug.

I don't know if it will help any but try with the new build posted here:

In that build no anis play in the menus, but they play fine in-mission

Yep, I let that bug slip through. It's fixed now though and a new build will be released later today. Keep an eye out for that one (same link) and give it a try. If it's still really slow then report back here.

OK I've uploaded a video to show you what I mean:

This is in the latest build (0530 I think).

See how the mouse cursor moves around much more jerkily in the Intelligence section? In the Database its 120fps (seems lower due to fraps) and in Intelligence it drops to 15fps.

Happens when any ANI is playing in the user interface (not in mission).

Still occurs in 0206 build

Ok. Still not sure what's going on here. It doesn't appear to be a general OpenGL bug but I can't say that with complete certainty. Since it's not happening in the game with talking heads can you check every screen with anis and see which ones are deffinitely slow and which aren't? You've already got cmdbriefings, techroom intel and weapon loadout but what about the ship selection screen if you don't use -ship_choice_3d and what about the mainhall?

Don't know if it's the same thing or similar but fs crashes when on the weapon loadout screen when it loads the primary's ani. using fs2_open_T-OAL-20050602.exe also happens on previous builds

If I don't use -ship_choice_3d the problem occurs there aswell. The mainhall has no probs.

Still no clue why this is happening but I did have a similar problem in D3D recently. It went away though and I wasn't able to track it down. Since it doesn't happen with the mainhall I'm guessing that it's more of a general interface problem rather than something specific to the anis. That's likely to make this more difficult to find though. I'm going to be cleaning out some of the UI code strangeness in the next few months so hopefully I'll stumble on this problem at that time.

I thought that I had suggested this already but I guess not. Try using the "-no_fps_capping" cmdline option. The rendering speed of the ANIs is pretty optimized and rather fast. There are some issues where having them able to render so fast messes up when it hits the FPS cap and really slows everything down.

I don't know if that will help any but it's pretty much the last suggestion I can come up with.

Using 0914 build now and its still happening even with that option. Thanks for trying anyway it just seems to be a unique situation for me.

Ok. Sorry I don't have any other ideas. I'm going to go ahead and close this for now since no one else has been able to reproduce the same problem. I'll keep trying to think of a fix though and if I find something I'll update this bug again.
