| Summary | 0000259: "Next" arrow not working | ||||
| Description | Taylor's 20040822 build: the "next" arrow in the briefing window does not work for the first frame of a briefing, and any click on that frame will prevent it from automatically advancing unless you click a ship icon and close the window that it opens. This is especially troublesome when there are no icons on the first frame of a given briefing, as there is not a reliable way to advance the briefing once it has gotten stuck. | ||||

I've noticed this as well... The right arrow key doesn't work either, though sometimes Shift-RightArrow will go to the end (like it should) and i can go backwards... I noticed it after Taylor's Pilot Build... |
I haven't noticed this yet but I'll play with it soon and figure out what's going on. I may have missed or added a change by accident just before releasing that build. |
I still haven't been able to recreate this problem. I've tried clicking on it and using the keyboard to advance and both work everytime I've tried. I can't find anything in the code that's changed since builds previous to the 20040822 one. Does it still happen with the October build or the PCX builds? |
It does not work in the updated inferno build you gave me,though i haven't checked the October one... |
Since I'm not the only one noticing it, it has to be something goofy somewhere. However, the problem, since I first noticed it in the pilot build, has not spread not only to all other SCP builds but to Vanilla FS2 and even FS1 as well. This may be an ugly SP2 bug rearing its head, because I started noticing it at about that time. |
It hit me though, and i don't run SP2... I noticed it creeping into vanillia though... Not FS1 yet (or hopefully ever... )... |

Ok so it's not really a build issue but something between the code base and WinXP. I'll assume for the moment that it's a particular WinXP update that is attributing to this problem. I haven't had a problem on Linux, OSX, or Windows 2000 but I don't use/test WinXP (since I kinda hate it). I'll setup a WinXP box to test with when I get the time but I don't know when that will be right now. Hippo, can you give a list of the updates/hotfixes that you do have installed? Were there any updates that you installed around the time that you first noticed the problem? I want to make sure and read the advisories and bug reports just in case something obvious pops up. |
I havent installed anything for the vanilla stuff in quite some time... I just noticed it when i opened it to make a video with a jump node in it... |
I meant WinXP hotfixes since you're not using SP2. I assume that you have SP1 at least so I just need the basic hotfix numbers. It's easy to get them by just going to "Add/Remove Programs" in the Control Panel and post a list of all of the hotfix numbers (KB?????? and/or Q??????). |

I uploaded a picture of them all (too many to type...)... Just of curiocity, that doesn't mean that its going to install SP2 on its own, right? And if it is, how do i stop it? |
@Hippo: I'm going through that list but it's going to take a while to read everything. Do you have compatibilty mode turned on for fs2_open_*? If so turn it off and see if that makes a difference. If not then try turning it on, just for kicks. As far as SP2 goes I think that you have to physically install it or have automatic updates turned on. If you have it set to just download only then I think it either asks or ignores SP2 completely. |
When you set it to download only, it will download the thing, but ask before installing. Mind, there is no difference between the popup for SP2 and the security patches, so you have to watch were you click. |
Just FYI, it still exists... But the problem in Vanilla went away, and its only now in FSO (strnage, no?)... This is as of 3.6.5... |
Is this bug still in current builds or can I close it? |
Still there... |
Yeah, still there for me too. |
I officially cannot replicate this. I've tried it on over a dozen different computers with Win2k, WinXP/SP1 (no updates), WinXP/SP1 (fully updated), WinXP/SP2 (no updates) and WinXP/SP2 (fully updated). I have absolutely no idea what's causing it. Part of the Linux merge (in progress) includes a few small UI control fixes so if we're lucky it will sort itself out. I haven't heard of anyone else reporting this except the people here. I would guess that it's not actually SP2 or any updates but something else system related. This bug might end up being closed until we come up with some new info. I'll leave it open for a while though, until a few builds with the new changes have been tested. If it ends up being fixed then great but if not then I'm not sure what else to do. |

After looking at the code a good bit I think that this may be tied to the selection icon bug. That's the bug where it takes a bunch of clicks to select something in the ship/weapon select screens. That bug is fixed so it's possible that this bug will get fixed with it. Everyone with the problem should check the next build released and see if it's still an issue. If not then please report it here. |

On the money taylor, sort of. It's back to acceptable levels in WMCoolmon's latest build, but not gone completely. The next arrow now works correctly in all cases EXCEPT that you have to click on a ship to bring up a 3d model first. And the game still won't advance on its own. I'll take it working as it is though, as bringing up a ship isn't much of a price to pay for it working. edited on: 02-24-05 20:20 |

That briefing stuff looks to have a weird mix of new and old interface code. A little more cleanup may help get it back to normal behavior so I'll keep fiddling with it. I'll update this bug as I add in the changes. It'd be nice to have this fixed for 3.6.6. |

Grab Goober's 04/23 build and try that. It will probably still not work right and if it doesn't then do this as a test: click-and-hold the left mouse button just above the next arrow (on the background itself), drag the cursor over the next arrow and then release the button. If it works consitantly that way then let me know. There is something strange in the UI mouse code with respect to clicks and the mask. There is an original :V: fix (read "hack") for the slider and it may but contributing to the problem here. There is another bug that Goober reported which is tied to this as well. The real problem probably needs to be tracked down at some point but the briefing screen especially is a big pile of crap as far as this is concerned. |
I can't get in to any mission with Goob's latest build, but would the slider hack be affecting the fact that neither the mouse nor the arrow keys will advance the briefing? EDIT: Got in to a mission, and sure enough, no combination of clicking and dragging will get the frame to advance. However, the pause button has the same effect of bringing up a ship-render popup, i.e. turn pause on and turn it back off after the timing for the stage is complete, and the frame will advance. Of further note, once I get past the first frame, the next button works completely normally, even if I go back to frame 1. edited on: 04-25-05 23:46 |

Please try the newest build and see if it still happens: http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=32852 |

One report that this is fixed in my newer builds and no reports that it's still happening so... Fixered. |
