Summary0000257: Game hangs randomly
DescriptionI don't know where to put this, since it seems to be independent of almost everything. Using Taylor's 20040822 build, I'm getting regular game hangs that I have to ctrl-alt-del out of (I have the Windows Security menu that pops up, so I can actually get out of the game without cold restarting). It has happened to me in missions (FS2 campaign, Homesick and DEM), in briefing/debriefing, the techroom, and the initial pilot selection screen. It happens in both D3D and OpenGL modes. So basically everywhere. In short, I get a complete lockup of all controls and graphics, and any sound that is currently playing runs in an indefinite loop (assuming it's a looping sound, I haven't had it happen yet while a voice was playing). There's nothing in a mission that would trigger it either as far as I can tell. As the game is hanging rather than crashing, I have no relavent error logs to post. I apologize that there isn't much there to go on, but it's damned annoying.

Is this still a problem? Does it happen with other/newer builds?

Oops, ment to respond to this sooner.

It's still an issue, happens with every build I try but there's a good probability it's something specific to my rig. It happens all the way back into retail, in fact, though I just noticed that recently.

Also, it seems to be more of a time in-game than anything related to how much has been loaded. It doesn't matter if I try to play missions, or if I just hang out in the interface screens for 5-10 minutes, I still get the hang. Ctrl-Alt-Del still works as it should, so it's not a system halt, but every game function ceases to work and sound just continues to play.

If you've got an AGP video card then make a couple of settings adjustments. Lower the AGP speed to like 2x or something for testing. If you have fast writes turned on then turn it off and see if it makes a difference. This just seems too much like a video card issue, something with the bus or possibly overheating. I've seen, and experienced, what you describe numerous times and it was always attributable to one of those two issues.

The thing is, it's not an AGP card, it's PCI-express. I'll take a look in Bios and see if there's anything I can change that would slow it down, but it's not a problem that comes up from any other game. I'll update this once I get it checked.

Does it still hang if you use the -nomusic cmdline option?

It doesn't appear to be as frequent, but I'm also still using a build that crashes after every mission. I'll have to test it further to be sure. However, it's a seperate problem if it is music, because this predates the OGG problems substantially and has crept into retail and even FS1.

Do other games work ok? This is likely a system problem (I think you've figured that out already) but perhaps there is something in the engine that's triggering the hang. I don't know what we can really do about it though, even if it is some engine related issue.

Not sure if you've tried this yet or not but try -nosound. If graphics isn't the issue then the next thing to look at is sound. If that does work then let me know what soundcard and drivers you are using. I can do up a special build for you for Windows using OpenAL if -nosound works and maybe that can tell us if it's hardware or software.

Yeah I've figured this was system-related since no one else seemed to have it. I should probably check my sound drivers to be sure, but Freespace is the only game that causes any sort of problem. I'll need to find a build that will let me get through more than a couple of missions without crashing over unrelated issues and test some things out, but it'll have to wait until at least after my exam tomorrow.

-nosound doesn't help. The latest builds actually kill my ability to alt-tab out as well.

ALT-TAB still works in OGL though right? I know it's been broken in D3D for a while but if it's OGL then that's another problem. I've been updating OGL for Windows to match the abilities of the Linux version (fullscreen/window switching, multisample, enable/disable vsync) so if OGL has ALT-TAB broken then I added something prematurely.

Alt-tab is patchy at best even in OGL. It seems to work much more efficiently in windowed mode though. But by saying I can't alt-tab out, what I'm seeing is a refusal of the game to return control of the display back to the OS, even if I bring up the task manager, once it enters this crash state. Before that, alt-tabbing would just kill it if anything.

I've just finished some testing. If I disable all audio it doesn't hang.

mrduckman, are you still having problems with the newer builds (like WMCs Tri-Build)? I want to go ahead and close this if your stuff is working.

Everything should be fixed now except for StratComm's problem which will basically require me going to the dude's house with a sledgehammer and beating the crap out of his computer. After that it would work perfectly but it's a little far down on my todo list. When I get some time off from the perils of work though... be ready StratComm.

Been off town this weekend. fs2_open_C20050306.exe seemed to have worked well so far. Though, I haven't throuroughly tested it yet.
If there's a newer build, I'll check it tonight.

If all it's going to take is a sledge to my CPU, then I can take care of that. Seriously though, as no one else is actually seeing the problem I'd say go ahead and close this. I'll keep a lookout for any changes and keep you guys posted, but it doesn't need to be an outstanding issue since it seems to be something extremely specific to my system.

Closered then.

If there is anything new StratComm just reopen this and I'll have another go at it.
