Summary0001957: FRED CTD - probably turret/subsystem number related
DescriptionI ran into this recently, as I implemented an in-game cutscene using additional proxy models (35 capital ship), when I ran into a CTD. *Technically* that number of ships should be possible. Further research showed, the crash is probably related to number of subsystems / number of turrets, it is not model specific. The smaller the model, the more models you can add and vice versa.

I attached a FS2 test mission featuring a 4 fighter wing plus 40 Colosus caps. Adding one additional Colossus model will crash FRED. Adding a fighter shouldn't be an issue though - FRED will crash a few ships later. Well, you should get the idea. ;)

The game allows you to have 15 sets of 200 subsystems. Which is where the 3000 subsystems number that has been mentioned in the past comes from.

I'm not entirely sure what would be the knock on effect of bumping NUM_SHIP_SUBSYSTEM_SETS. Hopefully nothing more than using up some extra memory.

Either way, this definitely shouldn't be crashing FRED. A warning/error should definitely be displayed instead.

I agree.

Every Saga mission is doable within the limit though (which it should be anyway ;) ). I figured, in the second to last mission, I'd show a big fleet in a cutscene - it is not vital to the gameplay, I can rip it out as well and work with radar blips and voice overs instead.

Well I'll bump the limit and see if anything happens as a result. Test it carefully in SP and Multi. If nothing goes wrong we can keep it. Otherwise I'll have to revert it.

I take it, the change will be in the upcomming nightly builds then. I'll keep an eye open for any possible issues. Two eyes, as often as I can spare them.

Change should be in the next nightly build. If it isn't up soon I'll upload mine.

Thanks! Anything specific I should be looking for while testing the updated build?

If you have any multi missions near the limit try them. I doubt there will be a problem but if there is, that's where I'd expect to see it.
