| Summary | 0000195: Variables randomly destroy themselves in FRED2 (Original and SCP) | ||||
| Description | http://www.sectorgame.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=869 Basically, apparently at random, my variables screw up when I save a mission in FRED, producing what's seen in the image. Sometimes variables will work, and as a general rule, it seems that on very simple misisons, it's less likely to screw up, but not immune. | ||||
| Additional Information | I classified it as major because the abscence of variables can kill a mission, and others (Karajorma, in the linked thread) have had to entirely rebuild missions to fix this bug. Which sucks. It doesn;t affect play directly, but it does screw with mission (and therefore campaign) building. | ||||

Uploaded the picture. I'm not sure entirely what's wrong, as I've used variables many times before and never had trouble with them. From your picture, it looks like you're making at least one mistake: the orange-colored icon is where you're supposed to specify your variable. It's currently blank - () - it's supposed to show the variable name. The second argument is what you're comparing/assigning the variable. I'm not sure offhand what the third argument is. I'll take a look next time I'm in FRED. |
|
|
The third argument isn't anything - it's something FRED puts there when I exit the editor and the bug occurs, one of the more obvious symptoms of the bug. |

Found out what the problem is... FRED doesn't like spaces in variable names. Just use a hyphen instead of a space and you won't have this problem. I'm leaving this open until I code a patch to fix this. I'm not sure when that will be, given the current state of FRED. :-/ |

Patch applied. Variable names are not allowed to have spaces. |
