Summary0000189: Crash to desktop upon clicking "play" on the FS 2 launcher
Description If the file fsport_music.vp (which is linked on the website as required in order to get the original Freespace music playing using the file warble_fs1.vp) is present within the Freespace2 root directory, regardless of the presence of warble_fs1.vp, the game will crash to desktop when the "play" button on the Freespace 2 launcher is pressed if EAX or DirectSound are selected. The game will play normally if sound is disabled.
Additional Information This applies to the FS port to FS 2 using the retail "gold" version of Freespace 2. No version of FS2_Open was used at any juncture.

 System specs:

ASUS A7N8X-E motherboard (onboard sound disabled in CMOS, drivers uninstalled)
Sounblaster Audigy
1333Ghz Athlon XP, 133 MHz FSB
2 x 512 PC3200 DDR 400 RAM, dual-channel configuration
Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB

This bug report system is meant for SCP (FSO) bugs only, this would be a bug with the mod, and not the scope of this site. Please go to www.3dap.com/hlp , go to the forums, and head for the port forums (down towards the bottom). They should be able to help you.

Not a SCP bug

Actually, this is indeed the SCP's doing... but there's not much we can do about it. As of 3.5.5, I coded the capability to play FS1-format music tracks during missions so that the FSPort could use the FS1 mission music. Unfortunately, since FS1 uses three NRML tracks and FS2 only uses one, the extra tracks cause an array overflow, and thus a CTD, in retail FS2.

There's really nothing we can do about this except to warn people not to use the enhanced music.tbl with FSO versions before 3.5.5 (including retail FS2). The bug is still invalid, but I wanted the SCP team to be aware of the reason.
