Saga provided two sets of ships to make AI use afterburners in more sane manner. That is player ships have lots of ab fuel, but it wont recharge while ai ships have only limited amount of ab fuel but then again they have recharging afterburners.

Try enabling the 'smart afterburner management' in the ai profiles table (or name-aip.tbm file).

For retail data based fs following should help with the issue:

 #AI Profiles
 $Profile Name: FS2 RETAIL
    +nocreate
 $smart afterburner management: YES
 #End

the xx-aip.tbm file you suggested is working quite well

It's fine with me, if the issue is closed. After knowing where to look (AI, smart afterburner management), I found the AI entry in the wiki and smart afterburner management seems to cover this issue. Thank you a lot for helping.
