DescriptionHere I send you some captures where I found these bugs.

I was playing the FS2 Campaign, when the Repulse crashed the Colossus.. Well, it crashes it alright, but not after is quite deep into the Colossus.
Additional InformationExe: FS_Open 23-03-2004 (Bobboau)

AFAIK this is a clipping plane issue with your video card, and it is worked on. i can not be sure.

Great screenshots and well written bugs but please do not put multiple bugs in one report unless they are definately related.

It makes it more complex to track bugs than it already is.

RT, these seem related already, it looks like the clipping plane issue. A Myrm existing past a jumpnode, and when a ship is breaking up, the whole model is shown multiple times. It looks like that is happening on both screenies.

I hope the DxDiag helps in something.

The caps were using DirectX. No OpenGL. (If that's what you, RT, asked for by saying "d3d caps")
If you want, I can try using OpenGL.

Clipping planes are a infinate slice of 3D space, like a really big polygon that these ships should be getting cut in half by, one side should not be displayed.

This gives the illusion of ships entering subspace or colliding.

Your cards dont support hardware clipping.
But neither does mine, it should be handled in software.

Do either of you have a DX SDK installed or have played with any videocard settings you dont fully understand?

No SDK and I didn't play with the confs of the videocard.
Furthermore, I updated the Nvidia driver to see if that would work. It didn't.

Funnily enough, while both of us have the same video card I do not get this problem on my old 98se machine. The 98se has the same video card as this PC. So I only seem to get it on XP.

I havn't touched any naughty settings either.

Forgot to tell, I played the Repulse mission last night, it exploded fine and did go into the Colossus quite a way, but not as far as that screenshot.
If I remember correctly, retail FS2's Repulse went in quite a bit too.

But the jumping out bug doesn't happen.

OK, heres a link to a DX8 sample exe.

You should see one full teapot and its reflection in the mirror.
If the second reflection teapot isnt clipped to the mirror then the problem is with your card.
If it is clipped then the problem is with fs2_open and we can look at the sample code to work out what they have done that makes it work.

Please both report your results.

Ferret, are you sure the cards are exactly the same?
Theres some interesting differences in the caps:

D3DPMISCCAPS_CLIPTLVERTS is yes for your win98 but no for your winXP!

On a unrelated side point your XP card supports vertex shader 1.1, whereas your win98 does not.

Very, very odd.

Files clip1.jpg, clip2.jpg and clip3.jpg are the messages I got from the ClipMirror Test. Which, sadly to say, failed.

DirectX Version is 9.0b. I don't know if what you're coding is DirectX 8.0 only. (Or if even has something to do with all this).

My video cards are very certainly the same. (The MSI-MS etc stuff confused me a little too, that it appeared on one and not the other. However both cards are certainly produced by that same company (MSI) they're definatly both GeForce 4MX 440's)
The drivers on my 98 one are up to date NVidia ones... I thought my XP also had the up to date drivers, I could be wrong so I will go and update them now and upload another D3D8 Caps txt.

The ClipMirror program cries about no media.

Right. I've updated the drivers with the newest ones on the www.nvidia.com website.
The adapter on the Caps txt now reads: NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440 with AGP8X

I just played a few missions.

Every ship jumps out like they have been, however I just flew a mission flying the Artemis bomber and it disappered like normal.
Also, when a Deimos jumps, it leaves behind one of it's textures instead of the whole model.

I've been playing a bit more with FS2_Open and found that no vasudan fighters but the Ptah jump out correctly. This started to look like a reuse of a buggy function that was not copied to all the fighters, I think.

Oh-kay, because I'm entirely insane. I have gone through ALL of the FS2 ships (Except cargo and sentry guns) made them jump out and see the results, one by one.

I'm going to upload the results as a txt file. I'm also going to upload a rar file containing 14 images, these images show all the times just a texture or two appears.

The results are quite varied, almost looks as if I have said yes or no randomly, maybe you can see some pattern.

What would be useful now is if you could double check (if you didnt the first time round) that this list is consistant?

Is there a random factor at work or is it really only certain models? You would probably only only need to confirm half the list.

Also another thing you could try is investigating the clipping plane visually.
Do this for one that does work and one that doesnt:

1. Wait for the ship to be half way into hyperspace
2. Press alt-pause
3. Press Enter to see external view in paused mode
4. Use the number pad to rotate around and view the ship and clipping effect from different angles.

If the clipping plane is working for some ships in fs2_open then it probably means that the clipping plane is incorrectly positioned for some reason. You might find that changing the viewing angle has some effect on this.

And a test in OGL would be a good idea to see if this problem is localised to D3D.

It might be an idea for me to make you up a build that displays the clipping plane.

I'm testing on the Hatshepsut (because I love it) I've listed it on the "big list" as a no. Which means the entire model doesn't disappear. But now it's just shedding it's textures in favour of one, like many of the others. I'll upload a picture of this one (Ferret_Hatshepsut.jpg).
Maybe I missed it or maybe FS2 is chasing us in circles. Anyway, I wondered if something was changing everytime you start Freespace, you see what I did with the list is have a mission where two ships immediatly jump out and view the results, I would minimise, mark what happend in my txt and make a picture if need be. I would change the mission and just restart it in game.

I've just reset the mission, same effect. Reset Freespace2 same effect. Gonna try in OGL now.

Well blow me down, this is definatly a Direct X only effect, the Hatshepsut warps out fine.

OpenGL seems to have another odd thing going on, my laser shots don't show up. Looks like another bug. *Rolls eyes*

Just for the record, I can collide with the Hatshepsut bit that is supposed to have disappeared when warping out. It appears to collide with the entire ship geometry, and not just the texture bits.

Also, I don't know how I'm supposed to look at this rotating thing, because as soon as my ship goes into warp the game wont let me rotate the camera. I can switch between normal and external view fine when paused but it wont let me rotate.
Yes, another build which shows the clipping plane would be good, at the moment there's a lot of guess work going on.

That Arcadia one, is that showing two bits when blowing up? That looks like an unrelated bug.
The multiple: Is that all the same fighter? So the efrfect is random for you?

Glowmaps are the textures for the models when they're "exposed" to certain lights, right? (Yes, this began to be a forum :P)

Just a side note: The problem with capital ships burying themselves inside other capital ships has been around since FS1. I'm pretty sure it has something to with collision detection. It's easily reproduceable by making a mission where one ship kamikazes another. I attached some screenshots from a FS1 mission where this happens.

I've just tested the last release. On OpenGL, with or without HT&L and glows, and the jump out sequence works well.
But with DirectX, it isn't fixed yet.

Yes, I tried with the -glow switching it on and off.
In OpenGL works well.
In DirectX, using the -glow and the -nohtl works. Using the -glow only, the clipping doesn't work well.

Yeah, I don't use Geforce4 MX anymore :P

Anyway, if any other who use it are having issues, I don't really think it would be fixed. The code doesn't seem to be <DX8 anymore and Geforce4 MX is a DirectX7 Card.

For the record, and to dig this thing back into the early days of the test, the issue with the split clipping during an explosion actually is related. The reason the entire arcadia is getting replicated in that shot from this time last year is that all of the Arcadia's textures are glowmapped; if you look at, say, a demon, only the glowing textures are replicated and the non-glowed ones clip just fine. There's something funny with software clipping and glowmapping, but beyond that I can only say that I too have seen it and reported it back in the days of bugzilla. I've since upgraded and my issues are quite different, but I can see why Ferret still finds this annoying.

If its any help, (wow this is a long bug) I used to experience all these problems (the warp things, and the splitting arcadia model thing) with a e-GF2 Mx, and now don't on an ATI 9700...

As far as i can tell, its mainly related to video cards (somehow?)

I can still notice this while running on a computer with a GeForce 4 MX. It's reliably linked to the glowmaps: turn them off, or fly a ship that doesn't have them, and warpout works properly.
