| Summary | 0001547: FS2 OGG cutscenes don't work in D3D -- game crashes with OpenGL | ||||
| Description | OpenGL will play the cutscenes for me, but when it gets to the actual menu, it crashes (illegal operation error). I am using D3D to play the game, but the cutscenes will not play. | ||||
| Additional Information | Graphics card: ATI Mobility Radeon Xpress 200 OpenGL version: 6.14.10.6347 Direct 3D version: 6.14.10.0471 FS2 flags: C:\Games\FreeSpaceOpen\fs2_open_3_6_9.exe -mod mediavps -spec -glow -jpgtga -2d_poof -missile_lighting -snd_preload I've heard ATI graphics cards have spotty OpenGL support. Perhaps there's something I can do to make OpenGL run the game instead? I have found a previous issue on this topic, 0001358 which was supposedly resolved in the forums. I cannot find the forum post on the topic, however, and the forum link wasn't posted in that issue. Is there a way I can see the cutscenes, either in or out of game using what I have? | ||||

D3D is dead. You do need to run in OGL. Try installing newest, not so newest, old Catalyst drivers. But probably your card has bad OGL support, not because being ATI but because being motherboard integrated bassic GPU. Search and post for help in the Freespace Support Board: http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?board=151.0 OTOH. For outside game ogg playing. Install ffdshow codecs. It will substitute any DivX, Xvid or whatever and they're fully free. I'm actually using the 20071206 Beta 4 version: http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/codecs_and_filters/ffdshow.cfm And use Media Player Classic 6.4.9.0. It's just the best available player with no additional bells. http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/video_players/media_player_classic.cfm And again it's fully free. |

Thanks so much. I tried it on my parents' computer, and everything works with OpenGL. It looks SO much better than with D3D too. I wish I could run it with OGL on my own, and I'll try the things you've suggested and hope for the best. I may just end up watching the cutscenes apart from the game... sad but at least better than nothing. |

Not fixing D3D issues as it is no longer supported, and the OGL problem is likely hardware/driver related (a HLP forum search should turn up more info on that). |
