These are tricky to say the least... But are your ... drivers up to date? other apps/games behaving strange? hardware overclocked? hardware running hot? |
hardware is new, not overclocked and not hot other apps behave normal, as they should. catalyst 07.7 realtek 5.10.0.5397 creative drivers should also be up to date, checked a month or so ago for updates. i'll check for updates any other drivers to update, than sound and graphic? |
driver updated, still crashing is there any possibility to create an error logfile? |

Just two guessings. FSOpen is detected by firewalls as trying to access Internet. So normally you are prompted if you want to allow it or not. This can mean a swap from FSOpen to Windows Desktop. If you are in fullscreen mode, this swap can lead to a full crash, (the "beautiful" blue screen), depending on system, OS, GPU and graphic drivers. Could it be your case? Another possible issue. Your GPU card doesn't have enough power. When you launch a game GPUs change from 2D mode (less clock frequency) to 3D mode (more clock frequency and more power needed). If your PSU is crap, if you have long wires with a lot of connetions (HDDs, DVDs, ...) between your PSU and the GPU, if you have fake connections somewhere, ..., depending on the luck, your GPU can be short of power when it swaps from the slower 2D mode to faster 3D mode. (At least this happened in my old system with a 7800 GS). (Remember that X2900 are really hungry cards). |

to point 1: i get no error message, nothing. no blue screen or something. pc just restarts. to 2.: running css in 1280x1024, all details and no problems. i have only one hdd and one dvd-drive, and a 550W dark-power psu, so... (2 ports connected to gpu) thanks for the help, but what i've tried over night: i've reinstalled the game (means i've downloaded all data again, since i don't own a retail version). now it works without problems. the only thing that changed is, that now in the "mod" section of the launcher, the mediavps are selected (was so after re-installing). but also if i select the "no MOD"-button (what i did befor reinstalling, because i've selected multimissions for MP-mode, thought this could be a prob in SP-mode), i can start the game without problems. so i don't know any reason why it works now... maybe just a fancy bug during downloading the game? |

Fixed by reinstall. |

after restarting my pc, i get the same error as before. if i remember right, the pc was not restarted after the installation finished. everything worked, started the game several times, everytime without problems. now i had to restart the pc, and the game won't launch again. immediatly after the last re-installation, i made a backup of the whole fs2_open folder.now, that the same error occoured again, i deleted the registry entries as given by the launcher (SOFTWARE\Volition\FreeSpace2) and the the fs2_open installation folder. now i copied back the backup, so that the fs2 installation folder does contain the same data as after the installation (so i think). setted up the launcher (which still had the old "features"-settings which i had configured before the recovery from the local backup) and tried to start the game, but it failed again with the same, old error (pc crashes). so i disabled all features-settings, but this also didn't help. 2 things made me think, may be important: - after these crashes, when the pc restarts automatically, i hear my hdd start cycling when the bios scans for it (so it must have stopped during the crash) - during a normal reboot, it keeps cycling - when i start the game, i hear my dvd-drive (but the game doesn't and couldn't need any data from a cd / dvd, and it doesn't depend on the dvd that is in the drive) EDIT: got additional information by deactivating the automatical restart after sys-crash: bluescreen: *** STOP: 0x0000008E (0xC0000005, 0xBFAE3CBB, 0xAA63603C, 0x00000000) *** atiok3x2.dll adress: BFAE3CBB base: BFAD8000 datestamp: 46aab2b8 EDIT2: searched for "atiok". found 2 files, both named "atiok3x2.dl_" at C:\ATI\SUPPORT\7-8_xp32_dd_50960\Driver\XP_INF\B_52100 C:\ATI\SUPPORT\7-7_xp32_dd_ccc_wdm_49709\Driver\Driver\XP_INF\B_49782 searched again, just in the C:\windows folder, found 2 "atiok3x2.dll" C:\WINDOWS\system32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\ReinstallBackups\0000\DriverFiles |

I don't want to be pessimistic, but it really seems a problem with the crap drivers ATI usually has rather than a FSOpen issue ... (specially OpenGL support in Catalyst is really awful) |
yes, so it seems to me too. i also got the problem located: since i have this new pc, i have also 2 displays connected to it, but i never use the second one. but when i got the new pc, i setted it up for 2 displays to experiment a little, so the desktop was extended on 2 displays. now i have deactevated the second one, and freespace now works without problems. ati's crappy drivers were the problem, hopefully i got a solution. but it remains a mistery to me, why it worked sometimes... thanks for all the help |
